Book Promotion Starts with Category Selection

When it comes to promoting your book, most authors think about reviews, ads, or social media buzz. But here’s a sneaky little truth: one of the biggest marketing moves you can make happens before you even launch—when you choose your Amazon categories. That category selection can make all the difference.

Categories may look like boring labels (“Fiction > Historical > 20th Century”), but they’re actually one of the most powerful tools for visibility. Why? Because categories determine how readers find you, what bestseller lists you might land on, and even how your book stacks up against the competition.

Last year, two of my writing coach clients—Jane Hiatt for her book Deep Medicine for Trauma and Sam Simon for his memoir Dementia Man—hit the #1 New Release designation in one of their three Amazon categories as soon as their books launched. Actually, Sam’s book had already achieved that #1 bestseller status the week before his official pub date, when his book was only available for pre-order.

Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Don’t just take the defaults. When you upload a book to Amazon, they’ll suggest categories based on keywords. Don’t stop there. Do your homework and base your category selection on what categories bestselling books in your genre are using.
  • Be strategic (but honest). You want categories where your book genuinely fits, but also where you won’t be buried under 50,000 other titles. Niche categories often give you a better chance to stand out—and maybe even snag that “#1 New Release” badge.
  • Think like your reader. If someone’s browsing on Amazon, what path are they likely to take to find a book like yours? Choose categories that line up with their mindset, not just your internal label for the story.
  • Know you’re not locked in. You can change your categories after launch. If your book isn’t gaining traction, try shifting to categories that make more sense or that put you in a slightly less crowded space.
  • Don’t forget about keywords. Categories and keywords work together. Keywords can even unlock “hidden” categories not shown in the regular dropdown menu. (Yes, Amazon’s a little sneaky that way.)

Bottom line? Categories aren’t just metadata—they’re marketing. A smart choice can make the difference between your book quietly gathering dust in the digital basement and showing up where readers are actively searching.

So before you hit “publish,” take the time to research. It may feel like housekeeping, but it’s actually strategy. And in a marketplace as crowded as Amazon, strategy is what gets you seen.
