Objectivity in Nonfiction: When Facts Meet Perspective

by | Mar 5, 2026 | Writing

Objectivity in fiction is tricky. In nonfiction, it’s even trickier—because now the stakes are higher. Readers expect truth, accuracy, and fairness, even when the story runs through your personal lens. But here’s the uncomfortable reality: total objectivity in nonfiction doesn’t exist. We all have a point of view, no matter how unbiased we claim to be when writing.

Every nonfiction writer makes choices—what to include, what to omit, what angle to emphasize. Those choices create bias, whether you mean to or not. The goal isn’t to eliminate bias (you can’t) but to acknowledge and manage it.

Start by asking, Why am I telling this story? If you’re writing memoir, your perspective is part of the point. Be honest about your subjectivity. Use specifics—sensory details, remembered dialogue, documented events—and let readers draw their own conclusions. The more transparent you are about your experience, the more credible you become.

If you’re writing journalism or essays, objectivity begins with rigorous verification.

  • Check every fact twice.
  • Confirm quotes with sources.
  • Verify information with two independent sources.
  • Avoid loaded language that tells readers what to think.

And watch for confirmation bias—the sneaky habit of seeking evidence that supports your viewpoint. The best nonfiction writers look for information that challenges their assumptions. If you find yourself resisting a fact because it doesn’t fit your narrative, pause. That discomfort is where deeper truth often lives.

Finally, invite editorial eyes. Even the most conscientious writers need outside readers who will flag moments where tone or framing might tip the balance. A trusted editor can ask, “Is this fact or interpretation?”—and help you adjust accordingly.

Objectivity isn’t about neutrality; it’s about integrity. You can write from your perspective without distorting the view. The more honestly you acknowledge your biases, the more your readers will trust you—not as an unfeeling observer, but as a thoughtful guide through the messy landscape of truth.
