You’ve written a book, into which you’ve poured yourself and all your expertise and wisdom. Now what? How are you going to actually make money as a writer with a book?
I’m sure you’re hoping that the world stops long enough for everyone to buy your book or at least recognize your achievement. All too often, however, it seems like nobody but you even notices your pub (publication) date. After you get over the inevitable letdown, you’ll need to switch hats and move from writer to mega-marketer.
I’ll talk about marketing your baby, which is critical, in another post. But marketing the book is just the start.
You need to create a backend—a related line of products—that allows you to up-sell your buyers and down-sell the lookie loos and window shoppers who have checked out but not bought your book. In short, you need to repackage the material in your book into a bunch of other products.
Obviously you’ll want an ebook in addition to a hard copy book. That’s an easy way to tap those people who are interested, but who don’t want to invest a lot of money. No brainer, right?
But have you thought about an audio program? As Brendon points out, if someone bought your $15 book, they might also want to pop for a $49 audio program.
If you’ve created a bunch of promotional videos for your book (a great idea, by the way), Brendon suggests turning them into a collection of DVDs. Add a written transcript of the content in the videos along with an educational manual and you now have a high-end product to sell.
Bundle your book with both the audio and video programs and bingo! Yet another high-end product.
Brendon’s list of possible back-end products for your book and ebook sales channel includes:
- Audios
- DVDs
- Webcasts
- Webinars
- Teleseminars
- Seminars
- Online courses
- Coaching
- Masterminds
- Speeches
Depending on your topic, you can even consider workshops and continuity programs offering exclusive material that people pay for every month.
Of course, it all starts with a book. A good book, that really helps people. But too many good books go unnoticed, and too many good writers are way too poor. Brendon’s 10 Essentials can help change that. You want to learn how to make money as a writer with a book? Check out the video below.
