A Writer’s Worst Enemy

The forensic artist below draws individuals based on their descriptions of themselves, and then again based on the description that someone they’ve just met provides them. As you’ll see, most of us are far more beautiful in real life than how we perceive ourselves.

As you watch this short, moving video, think about how harsh you might tend to be toward yourself. Then watch it again and think specifically about how critical you are of your thinking and your language when it comes to your written work.  A writer’s worst enemy is usually him- or herself. So I want you to consider what might happen if you approached your writing with appreciation for what works instead of berating yourself for what doesn’t. That doesn’t mean that that you have to accept your flaws as a writer or the shortcomings in your work. But analyzing those and figuring out what to do about them works a lot better than self-castigation.

We need to feel safe when we’re creating. Be your own best friend during the process, not your own worst enemy.
