San Francisco Writing Contest Open to All

You may not have left your heart in San Francisco, but you might if you wind up winning the San Francisco Writing Contest. The monetary prize is modest to be sure, but the consult with a literary agent in your genre could be priceless. You’ll find the contest information below. You’ve got a month to make the deadline. Good luck!

The official writing contest sponsored by the San Francisco Writers Conference is now open to writers worldwide in the categories of fiction, nonfiction/memoir, poetry, and children’s/YA books. All writers are invited to enter up to the first 2,500 words of an unpublished manuscript, short story, essay, or poem in the appropriate category.

The grand prize is $500 and a consultation with a literary agent who represents works in the winner’s genre. First place winners in each of the other categories will be awarded $100 prizes. The winners will be announced at the 2013 San Francisco Writers Conference on February 15th. All finalists will appear in the SFWC Event Program and be featured in the SFWC Newsletter.

The deadline for entries is January 7, 2013.

The Process:

Writers mail the official entry form, the correct fee, and up to the first 2,500 words of a complete, unpublished manuscript, short story, essay or poem, in one of the following categories:

Fiction
Non-Fiction/Memoir
Children’s/Young Adult (YA)
Poetry

A group of judges approved by the San Francisco Writers Conference management team will select the top 5 entries in each category and then these finalists will be judged by a group of publishing industry professionals to select the grand prize winner and winners in each category. The San Francisco Writing Contest judges solely on the quality of writing from its entrants and awards prizes accordingly.
