Descriptive Writing that Works

Good description doesn’t just paint a picture; it invites readers to experience a moment. It’s not about adjectives—it’s about precision, perspective, and personality. The best description reveals as much about the narrator as it does about the scene.

Take this gem from Caitlin Moran’s memoir How to Build a Girl: “I was handed a smock in an unflattering color [salmony pink] that made me with my Celtic reddish hair and my freckles look like a large, cooked prawn.”

In one sentence, Moran gives us color, character, humor, and voice. We don’t just see the smock—we see her seeing herself. The description works because it’s filtered through personality.

Here’s what we can learn from it:

Description isn’t objective reporting. It’s subjective. It’s interpretation. Let your character’s biases, moods, and insecurities shape what they notice. Moran’s line is funny because it’s self-aware.

Specific, surprising comparisons will always win the day. Avoid the obvious (“red as a rose”). Fresh images stick. “Cooked prawn” is vivid and absurd—exactly right for the moment.

The best details carry feeling and blend emotion with detail. Instead of “It was raining,” try “The rain needled the windows like it wanted in.”

Readers don’t need every item in a room, so nix the cataloguing approach. Choose two or three telling details—the ones that reveal tone, status, atmosphere, or character.

Great description works because it’s anchored in character and voice. It shows us the world filtered through someone’s eyes—ideally, eyes that see it a little differently than ours. But it also needs to sound rhythmic and alive to work. So read it aloud to yourself. If it sounds like a real estate listing, it’s time to rethink and revise.
