If you’re a writer, it sure helps to be a people watcher. And New Orleans just may provide some of the best people watching around. Take the shot below of the group of residents on Frenchmen’s Street. You just know they sit out like this every clear day. Contrast that with the dancing shots from The Maison, a club where I finally got my Zydeco music fix.
Yes, let the good times roll. Or laissez les bon temps rouler as they say in New Orleans. But the city is also replete with people not so fortunate.
I wanted to take both the girl and the pup home, give them a hot bath, a monster meal and a home. It made my heart hurt. That, too, is an increasing part of New Orleans.
Then there were all the people plying their trade, again in a very particularly Nola way.
You don’t have to go to New Orleans to find characters you can photograph and use as inspiration when you’re populating your written world. Give it a try. You’ll be surprised by the riches you come back with and how that impacts writing character detail.
