Some books take a long time to birth. Such has been the case with Battle for Grace: A Memoir of Pain, Redemption and Impossible Love, the book I wrote with Cynthia Toussaint and John Garrett. Battle for Grace chronicles Cynthia’s struggle against a crippling illness that would remain undiagnosed for years, against the health institutions that repeatedly failed her, and against unrelenting pain.
Most people don’t talk about chronic pain so intense that you can do nothing but scream.
Most people don’t talk about the craziness–or even the uncontrollable violence–that unrelenting pain can provoke.
But Cynthia isn’t most people.
Battle for Grace provides a brutally honest look at how pain can tear apart a life and a relationship. With enough grit and the right person by your side, however, it is possible to put the pieces back together and find redemption. That’s what made me want to be involved in this book in the first place. Cynthia refused to allow her illness to steal her life. She refused to accept the inadequate health care provided to her and so many others, eventually donning the mantle of health care advocate to challenge those HMOs and pharmaceutical companies that focus on profit instead of patient care. And she and her now husband John refused to let the mystery illness that threatened to steal her life steal their love.
A Memoir of Pain, Redemption and Impossible Love. I couldn’t have said it better myself. Oh right. I did say (or at least write) that. Ha!
Seriously, treat yourself to a read that will take you through the fires of pain, the cleansing rain of redemption and the ultimate beauty of an impossible love that would not die. You’ll see why Cynthia, John and I fought so hard to get this book into print, and why we’re so proud of it.
