If you’ve ever had—or tried to get—a book published, you already know how arbitrary the publishing industry can be. If you find that irritating, you might want to take some deep, calming breaths before you read the New York Times News Service article about the publishing pen name game, which was republished last month in The Bend Bulletin.
You may not be able to judge a book by its cover, but apparently the byline can color an editor’s opinion about a manuscript in a less than positive way. We all know how tough it is to get published if you’re an unknown author. It turns out that unknown author bylines sometimes trump those of published authors if book sales turned out to be less than stellar. The bottom line? Sometimes a pen name is the name of this publishing game.
