Writing Lessons From My Dogs: Making the Imperfect Perfect

by | Jul 10, 2025 | Lessons From my Dogs

Have you ever noticed that in life, things are rarely exactly how we want them to be? You almost never find the perfect house that doesn’t require a compromise or five. Ditto on the partner, work, and physical fronts. But if you pay attention and are true to yourself, you can usually make that imperfect situation work. At least that’s what a lot of years and a lot of pups have taught me.

Take Misha. He loves to be outside. He loves a chin rest. At my house, the railing on the platform between the dog door by the glass door and the ramp that leads down to the backyard is ideal. Except for one tiny detail. The platform itself just isn’t large enough to fit the length of his 65-pound body.

You would think that might deter him.

Nope.

Every day, multiple times a day, he gets as much of his torso outside as he can, rests his chin on the railing, and trusts enough to allow his booty and tail to hang out inside by the back door and dining room table.

How many of us would write more and perhaps better with that attitude instead of undermining ourselves and getting in our own way?

Here’s the deal. Spend enough time waiting for the perfect setup or opportunity to write, and you’ll end up with a fraction of the pages you would have if you had just found a way to make the imperfect work perfectly.
