Before You Hire an Editor

Before You Hire an Editor

You’re ready to hire an editor. Malzetov! That probably means that you’ve gotten to the end of your manuscript.

Before you pull the trigger and hire an editor, however, hit the pause button. Then ask yourself: how do you know that the editor you’re about to hire is going to edit your book in a way that honors your vision?

You don’t.

That’s why I always suggest that clients hire me to evaluate/critique their manuscripts before hiring me to edit. After reading the whole manuscript, I provide a written memo detailing what I think works, what doesn’t work and what I believe is needed.

I do this for two main reasons, and they’re all about you. First and foremost, as a writer you want to make sure that you and your editor agree on the work that’s to be done. There are almost as many ways to edit a book as there are ways to write a book. You want to make sure you’re both in agreement before any work starts.

Second, once we’ve agreed on the scope of work, we can discuss how best to accomplish the goal. Sometimes writers wind up hiring me as a writing coach rather than an editor and do a lot of the work themselves. Other times they green light the editing and we go from there. Either way, we not not only know what we’re building, we have a blueprint that spells out how to get it done.
