Traditional Publishing vs. Self-Publishing

marketing booksPortland book designer Jennifer Omner, All Publications, included the following information about traditional publishing vs. self-publishing in her newsletter.

In the report What Advantages Do Traditional Publishers Offer Authors?, authors were not overly satisfied with their traditional publishing experience. And here’s a surprising tweet from that Digital Book World conference session: Over 1/3 of traditionally published authors have made the move to self-publishing. “And that percentage is growing,” says @DBWeinberg #DBW14

Self-publishing, of course, has its downside. Instead of receiving an advance, you’re shelling out money to have your book edited and designed. On the other hand, with print-on-demand, you no longer have to pay for thousands of books to be printed and warehoused. Nor do you have to handle distribution. And you get to retain control, something you give up with traditional publishing.

Either way, plan to invest in marketing your book if you actually want people to buy it.
