Who’s Cooking — Famous Chefs or Cookbook Ghostwriters

So you really think that new cookbook you just ordered was actually written by Rachel Ray, Bobby Flay, Paula Deen or Martha Stewart? According to one of  today’s cookbook ghostwriters, you need to think again. And while you’re at it, don’t assume that your favorite celebrity chef created the recipes or even tasted the food. Look to the cookbook ghostwriters instead.

For the inside scoop into the cookbook scene, check out The New York Times article “I Was a Cookbook Ghostwriter“. The book has spawned protests from celebrity chefs far and wide, all claiming to be the real thing when it comes to their cookbooks. I’ll let you be the judge.

While it may disillusion more than a couple of foodies, it provides a terrific reality check about ghostwriting in general. Not to say that the job doesn’t have its perks, but as with most things there’s a downside, which writer Julia Moskin explores with brutally honest humor.
